What this is, and what it is not

The Essential Eight is the Australian Signals Directorate's baseline set of mitigation strategies. Maturity Level 1 is the entry tier. This assessment walks through the ML1 indicators using the ASD's own wording, with a plain-English note under each one.

It matters in your sector for a specific reason: health service providers are covered by the Privacy Act regardless of turnover, and Australian Privacy Principle 11 requires reasonable steps to protect personal information. The Essential Eight is the most widely recognised benchmark for what "reasonable steps" looks like in practice. NDIS providers face parallel expectations under the Practice Standards, and accredited general practices under RACGP Criterion C6.4.

This is an indicative self-assessment, not a formal ASD assessment. It reflects what you tell it. A real maturity assessment verifies each control against system configuration. Treat the result as a conversation starter, not a certificate.
